About This Piece
Pale diagonal bands cross the face of a dark oval Wushi plaque. A small ornate crest and raised border frame the stone's pattern without adding a figurative scene.
Carving details and what to examine
The framing is part of the composition, so examine its relationship to the central motif as well as the motif itself. Edge and angled views help show whether the border is raised, recessed or simply outlined, and make the transitions into the main surface easier to assess.
Material and stated origin
This plaque is listed as black and white nephrite (qinghua) and depicts Wushi, a Wish for Peace. Its stated origin is Xinjiang, China; the geographic attribution is separate from mineral identification.
