About This Piece
The three Fu Lu Shou figures stand within an oval medallion framed by layered scroll borders. The plain domed reverse contrasts with the closely worked figures and ornament on the front.
Carving details and what to examine
The framing is part of the composition, so examine its relationship to the central motif as well as the motif itself. Edge and angled views help show whether the border is raised, recessed or simply outlined, and make the transitions into the main surface easier to assess.
Material and stated origin
This plaque is listed as white nephrite and depicts Fu Lu Shou. Its stated origin is Xinjiang, China; the geographic attribution is separate from mineral identification.
