About This Piece
Guanyin is formed in openwork within a rectangular plaque. Deep cut-through passages around the robe contrast with the solid head and surrounding frame, and the angled view shows the depth of those openings.
Carving details and what to examine
Openwork creates actual openings through the jade, so the surrounding bridges are part of the structure as well as the design. Look at both faces and the inside edges under changing light to assess the finish and check for damage around these narrow connections.
Material and stated origin
This plaque is listed as white nephrite and depicts Guanyin. Its stated origin is Xinjiang, China; the geographic attribution is separate from mineral identification.
