White Hetian Jade Plaque: Looking Far Ahead, 9 g

No. This individual piece has already been collected and remains online as a reference. You can ask Yufu Jade to look for a similar material, form or carving subject; any new piece is documented and quoted separately.

A small monkey hangs beneath a branch with sharply defined leaves. The rectangular composition is sparse, and the close-up shows how the animal is separated from the fine branchwork above. The plant forms invite a close look at the meeting points between petals, leaves and the surrounding ground. Compare these small details with the larger outline to judge the balance of the design. Side lighting is useful for seeing depth without mistaking a cast shadow for a carved line.

The listed dimensions are 32.4 x 20.9 mm, approximately 1.28 x 0.82 in. Compare these measurements with a ruler to judge the scale. Listed weight: 9 g. Confirm the suspension opening and any included cord or fittings.

The monkey is a lively subject in Chinese decorative art and may also carry wordplay associated with rank or advancement. Its reaching pose and relationship to the branch give this composition its particular character. Read this as the traditional subject of the carving, rather than a statement about its age, maker or a promised effect on the owner.
