About This Piece

A curling mythical creature fills an oval plaque with a pierced top. The detail view emphasizes its crest and feather-like cuts, while the smoother surrounding field keeps the animal readable.

Carving details and what to examine

Openwork creates actual openings through the jade, so the surrounding bridges are part of the structure as well as the design. Look at both faces and the inside edges under changing light to assess the finish and check for damage around these narrow connections.

Material and stated origin

This plaque is listed as white nephrite and depicts Mythical Beast. Its stated origin is Xinjiang, China; the geographic attribution is separate from mineral identification. The supplied description notes yellow skin. This is a description of appearance, not confirmation of treatment status.
