About This Piece
A phoenix's long curves travel over a rounded oval face with peony-related ornament. The reverse keeps much more of the surface plain, with a small central decorative motif.
Carving details and what to examine
Compare the outer profile in the full view with the smaller carved details in the close-ups. An angled view helps separate changes in surface depth from differences caused by lighting. Photographs are useful for studying the composition, but do not establish the maker, the tools used or a workmanship grade.
