About This Piece

Zhuangzi's reclining figure and the butterfly above him fill a narrow oval plaque. The scene curves with the rounded stone, and the oblique photograph shows the raised figure against a much shallower background.

Carving details and what to examine

Compare the outer profile in the full view with the smaller carved details in the close-ups. An angled view helps separate changes in surface depth from differences caused by lighting. Photographs are useful for studying the composition, but do not establish the maker, the tools used or a workmanship grade.

Material and stated origin

This plaque is listed as white nephrite and depicts Zhuangzi's Butterfly Dream. Its stated origin is Xinjiang, China; the geographic attribution is separate from mineral identification. The supplied description notes yellow skin. This is a description of appearance, not confirmation of treatment status.
