About This Piece

Shakyamuni Buddha is framed by a halo on a softly rounded yellow-green plaque. Rows of lotus petals at the base give the figure a layered platform beneath the curved robes.

Carving details and what to examine

The small figure details are useful points for a closer inspection: follow the visible contours rather than judging the work only from the overall silhouette. A gently rotated view helps reveal how the face, clothing or head ornament joins the surrounding surface.

Material and stated origin

This plaque is listed as yellow nephrite and depicts Shakyamuni Buddha. Its stated origin is Xinjiang, China; the geographic attribution is separate from mineral identification.
