About This Piece

Carved from Xinjiang seed material, the white jade is described as even in tone, dense and oily with an inner glow, and is accented by yellow skin across parts of the stone. The subject is Bo Le, the legendary judge of horses: rendered in relief, he is shown with a high forehead and long beard in loose scholarly robes, one hand resting on the horse while the animal rears its front hooves and stretches its neck as if neighing. Listed at 96 x 55 mm (the source also gives a thickness of about 15 mm) and 137 g, this is a substantial relief piece. The source attributes it to master carver Fu Xuefei and notes a silver award at a 2011 jade carving exhibition. Ask Yufu Jade to confirm the depth and send close-up photographs of the carving and its yellow skin.

The meaning behind this piece

Bo Le was a famous judge of horses in Chinese lore, and 伯乐相马 (Bo Le Xiang Ma) has come to mean recognising rare talent where others overlook it. The motif is traditionally read as meeting a discerning patron or receiving well-earned recognition. It is a cultural association rather than a guarantee of any outcome.

Sizing and wear

At 96 x 55 mm (approx. 3.8 x 2.2 in) and 137 g this is a broad, weighty relief carving; the third dimension is confirmed per piece.

Keeping this piece at its best

  • Dust with a soft, dry cloth and wipe lightly with a barely damp cloth when needed.
  • Keep it away from perfume, cosmetics and household cleaners.
  • Store it flat in a padded box, away from harder objects.

Common Questions

Can I buy this exact piece?

No. This individual piece has already been collected and remains online as a reference. You can ask Yufu Jade to look for a similar material, form or carving subject; any new piece is documented and quoted separately.

How should I display a relief carving like this?

Relief pieces read best standing slightly tilted toward the light, on a small wooden stand, so the raised Bo Le and horse catch shadow and depth. Avoid a position in strong, direct sunlight.

What does the yellow skin on the white jade mean?

The yellow skin is the natural outer rind of the seed pebble, kept deliberately by the carver. On Hetian jade it is prized as evidence of natural seed material, and collectors read a bright, even yellow skin as a sign of a good stone.
