Green Hetian Jade Plaque: An Elder Enjoying the Cool, 61.3 g

No. This individual piece has already been collected and remains online as a reference. You can ask Yufu Jade to look for a similar material, form or carving subject; any new piece is documented and quoted separately.

An elderly figure sits beneath a tree on a dark arched panel. The plain sky, small round emblem and ridged lower border give the compact scene a balanced structure. The framing is part of the composition, so examine its relationship to the central motif as well as the motif itself. Edge and angled views help show whether the border is raised, recessed or simply outlined, and make the transitions into the main surface easier to assess.

The listed dimensions are 56 x 42 mm, approximately 2.2 x 1.65 in. Compare these measurements with a ruler to judge the scale. Listed weight: 61.3 g. Confirm the suspension opening and any included cord or fittings.

The scholar at ease is a familiar subject in Chinese literati art. A tree, table or quiet resting place evokes a retreat from official duties and an appreciation of cultivated leisure. Read this as the traditional subject of the carving, rather than a statement about its age, maker or a promised effect on the owner.
