About This Piece
A dark oval centre is framed by layered geometric bands and dense scrollwork. The crest and base are rounded and heavily ornamented, giving the traditional breastplate motif a substantial outline.
Carving details and what to examine
The framing is part of the composition, so examine its relationship to the central motif as well as the motif itself. Edge and angled views help show whether the border is raised, recessed or simply outlined, and make the transitions into the main surface easier to assess.
Material and stated origin
This plaque is listed as green nephrite (qingyu) and depicts Huxinjing, a Traditional Breastplate Motif. Its stated origin is Xinjiang, China; the geographic attribution is separate from mineral identification.
