About This Piece
A compact archaistic dragon curls within a large C-shaped border on a narrow plaque. The pointed upper corner and rounded lower edge give the small design an off-centre silhouette. The source notes small cotton-like inclusions in the jade; these should be assessed in the close-up photographs.
Carving details and what to examine
The framing is part of the composition, so examine its relationship to the central motif as well as the motif itself. Edge and angled views help show whether the border is raised, recessed or simply outlined, and make the transitions into the main surface easier to assess.
Material and stated origin
This plaque is listed as white nephrite and depicts Archaistic Dragon. Its stated origin is Xinjiang, China; the geographic attribution is separate from mineral identification. The supplied description notes retained pebble-skin texture. This is a description of appearance, not confirmation of treatment status.
