Can Jade Go in an Ultrasonic Cleaner? Cleaning Myths Answered
Can jade go in an ultrasonic cleaner? Why Yufu Jade recommends hand cleaning for Hetian jade, and what to use instead.
The short answer: do not put Hetian jade in an ultrasonic cleaner. The machine\u2019s vibration is designed for metal, and it targets exactly the weaknesses a jade piece can hide — natural fissures, assembled fittings and cords.
Why ultrasonic cleaning is risky for jade
Ultrasonic cleaners shake dirt loose with high-frequency vibration. Natural nephrite can contain internal fissures, cotton zones and healed lines; vibration concentrated at those points can extend a hidden weakness into a visible crack.
Many jade pieces are not pure stone: cords, elastic, glue points and metal fittings all react differently to vibration and heat. The stone may survive while the fitting loosens or the glue fails.
Steam cleaners are the same story
Steam adds sudden heat to sudden pressure. Nephrite tolerates heat far better than many stones, but the combination still risks assembled parts and any treatment layer on the surface.
If a jeweller suggests machine cleaning, ask whether the piece is one solid stone with no fittings. If it is not, hand cleaning is the safer route.
What to do instead
Hand cleaning takes two minutes: a soft cloth, lukewarm water, a few drops of mild soap, then a clean damp cloth and thorough drying. For carved details, a soft dry toothbrush used lightly lifts dust without stressing anything.
Clean the cord separately or replace it when soiled. The jade itself rarely needs more than this.
This guide is general jade care education. Always follow the care notes for the individual piece, and contact Yufu Jade if a piece needs cleaning, re-stringing or repair advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can jade go in an ultrasonic cleaner?
Yufu Jade recommends against it. Vibration can extend hidden fissures and loosen cords or fittings. Hand cleaning with a soft cloth is safer.
Is a steam cleaner safe for jade?
Not for most pieces. Sudden heat and pressure risk assembled parts and any surface treatment. Solid, plain stone tolerates more, but hand cleaning is always the safer choice.
What is the safest way to clean jade?
Lukewarm water, a few drops of mild soap and a soft cloth, followed by a clean damp cloth and thorough drying. Use a soft dry brush lightly for carved details.
Can I use a toothbrush on jade?
A clean, soft toothbrush with a very light touch is fine for dust in carving lines. Do not scrub hard, and avoid toothpaste — its abrasives can dull the polish.
