Does Jade Need Oil? How to Keep Hetian Jade Looking Its Best
Does jade need oil? Why natural Hetian jade does not need commercial oils, where the nourishing myth comes from, and how to keep the stone looking its best.
Natural Hetian jade does not need oil. Its polish comes from the stone itself, and commercial jade oils mostly add a temporary film that attracts dust. The traditional habit of "nourishing" jade — pan yu in Chinese — means handling and wearing it, not feeding it.
Where the oiling habit comes from
Some sellers oil jade for display, because a thin film of oil makes a stone look momentarily glossier and hides dryness under shop lights. Buyers then think oil is required care and continue the habit at home.
For untreated nephrite, the habit is unnecessary. The stone is not porous the way wood or unpolished rock can be; it cannot "drink" oil.
Wearing is the care
The Chinese tradition of pan yu is closer to wearing and handling: skin contact and gentle rubbing keep the surface clean and develop a soft, lived-in lustre. The "nourishment" is attention, not a product.
Regular gentle wear, cleaning when the piece looks dull, and dry storage do more than any oil ever will.
What to avoid
Avoid mineral oil, olive oil, baby oil and commercial jade oils on the stone. They leave residues that collect dust, dull the polish over time, and can stain cords and fittings.
If a piece was oiled when you received it, clean it with a soft cloth and mild soap to remove the film, then dry it and wear it normally.
This guide is general jade care education. Always follow the care notes for the individual piece, and contact Yufu Jade if a piece needs cleaning, re-stringing or repair advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does jade need oil?
No. Natural Hetian jade does not need oil. Oils leave a temporary film that attracts dust. Wearing, gentle cleaning and dry storage keep the stone looking its best.
What is pan yu?
Pan yu is the Chinese tradition of caring for jade through handling and wearing. The "nourishing" is attention and skin contact, not feeding the stone with oil.
Can I use baby oil on jade?
It is not recommended. Baby oil and mineral oils leave residue that dulls the polish and can stain cords and fittings. A clean, dry stone needs none.
Why does my jade look dull after cleaning?
You have likely removed an oil or wax film that was making it shine. Give it a few days of normal wear, or ask the seller whether the piece was finished with wax.
