How to Store Hetian Jade Safely
How to store Hetian jade safely: separate pouches, lined boxes, avoiding sunlight and heat, and the storage habits that prevent scratches and chips.
Most jade damage happens in storage, not on the wrist: pieces jumbled in a drawer, bangles stood on edge, pendants left on a windowsill. Five simple rules prevent almost all of it.
Store every piece separately
Give each piece its own soft pouch or a lined compartment. Nephrite is tough, but metal fittings, harder stones and other jewellery still scratch the surface when pieces move against each other.
If you only have one box, wrap each piece in a soft cloth before they share a compartment.
Bangles flat, pendants hung or coiled
Lay bangles flat rather than standing them on edge — a standing bangle is one knock away from a chip. Coil pendant cords loosely or hang them so the knot does not kink.
Bead bracelets are happiest coiled in a pouch or laid flat; folding them sharply stresses the cord.
Away from light, heat and humidity
Keep jade out of long direct sunlight and away from radiators and windowsills. Heat and dry air do not crack nephrite easily, but they age cords, elastic and glue.
Very damp storage is equally unfriendly to cords and metal fittings. A drawer in a normal room is the ideal place.
The weekly habit
Once a week, wipe worn pieces with a soft dry cloth before putting them away, and glance at cords and clasps. Catching a worn cord in storage is better than catching it on your neck.
For pieces stored long-term, take them out occasionally, clean them gently and check their condition.
This guide is general jade care education. Always follow the care notes for the individual piece, and contact Yufu Jade if a piece needs cleaning, re-stringing or repair advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should I store a jade bangle?
Lay it flat in a padded, dedicated pouch or compartment, away from harder objects. Standing bangles on edge or stacking them invites chips.
Does sunlight damage jade?
Brief daylight is fine. For storage, keep pieces out of long direct sunlight and away from heat sources, mainly to protect cords, elastic and fittings.
Can I keep jade in the bathroom?
It is better not to. Damp air ages cords and metal fittings. A dry drawer or box in a normal room is ideal.
What is the best container for jade?
A soft cloth pouch per piece, inside a lined box. If pieces share a compartment, wrap each one separately first.
