Can You Wear Jade in the Shower, Swimming or Sleeping?
Can you wear jade in the shower, swimming pool or to bed? What water, soap and chlorine do to Hetian jade, and when to take it off.
Plain water does not harm Hetian jade — but the shower is full of things that do: soap, shampoo, hot water and wet cords. The practical rule is to take jade off before showering, swimming and sleeping, and put it on when you are ready for the day.
Showers and baths
Soap and shampoo leave residues that build up on the polish and dull it over time. Hot water softens and stresses cords, elastic and glue points far more than it affects the stone.
Take the piece off before showering. If it gets wet by accident, dry it with a soft cloth and let the cord dry completely before wearing again.
Swimming and chlorine
Pool chlorine and salt water are the two environments to avoid. Chlorine can dull the surface and attack fittings; salt water leaves residue that is hard to remove from fine carving.
Rinse with plain water immediately if a piece has been in either, then dry it carefully.
Sleeping with jade on
Sleeping in a bangle or pendant risks the piece more than it benefits it: bangles knock against the bed frame, and pendant cords tangle or pull. Taking jade off at night also lets cords dry.
If you prefer to sleep with a piece for personal reasons, choose a soft, smooth form without sharp edges and check the cord regularly.
This guide is general jade care education. Always follow the care notes for the individual piece, and contact Yufu Jade if a piece needs cleaning, re-stringing or repair advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can jade get wet?
Yes, plain water is harmless to nephrite. The concern is soap residue, hot water on cords, and chlorine or salt water, so brief accidental wetting is fine if you dry the piece afterwards.
Can I shower with jade on?
Yufu Jade recommends removing jade before showering. Soap and shampoo dull the polish over time, and hot water stresses cords and fittings.
Can I swim wearing jade?
Avoid pools and the sea. Chlorine and salt water can dull the surface and attack fittings. Rinse with plain water immediately if it happens.
Can I sleep with a jade bangle on?
It is safer to take it off: bangles knock against the bed and cords tangle at night. Night-time off also lets cords dry fully.
