How to Replace a Jade Pendant Cord

How to replace a jade pendant cord: choosing the right length and material, tying a secure knot, and knowing when the old cord must go.

How to Replace a Jade Pendant Cord

The cord is the part of a pendant that wears out, and it should be replaced before it fails. Choosing the right length and material, and tying a knot that holds, is a ten-minute skill every jade owner should have.

When to replace the cord

Replace the cord when it shows fuzz or shine at the knot, when the pendant opening has worn the cord thinner, or when the colour has darkened from skin oils. A pendant on a tired cord is a lost-pendant waiting to happen.

As a habit, check the cord whenever you clean the piece. Daily-worn cords usually want replacing every one to two years.

Length and material

Choose the length by how the pendant sits: around 40 to 45 cm hangs at the collarbone, 50 to 60 cm at the chest. Measure an old cord you liked and copy it.

Waxed cotton, nylon and braided silk all work well. Match the cord thickness to the pendant opening — it should pass through without forcing and slide without slopping.

The knot that holds

Pass the cord through the pendant, bring the ends together, and tie a secure knot — a surgeon\u2019s knot or a double overhand — at the desired length. A sliding knot lets you adjust the length after tying.

Pull the knot firm, trim the ends short, and seal nylon or synthetic cord ends with a lighter flame briefly so they do not fray. Test the knot before wearing.

A clear care note

This guide is general jade care education. Always follow the care notes for the individual piece, and contact Yufu Jade if a piece needs cleaning, re-stringing or repair advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace a jade pendant cord?

A daily-worn cord usually every one to two years, or sooner if it shows fuzz, shine at the knot or darkening from oils.

What length should a jade pendant cord be?

About 40 to 45 cm sits at the collarbone; 50 to 60 cm at the chest. Copy a length you already like, or ask for a sliding knot to adjust.

What is the best knot for a pendant cord?

A surgeon\u2019s knot or double overhand is secure and simple. A sliding knot is useful when you want to adjust the length.

Can I use a metal chain with a jade pendant?

Yes, when the opening or bail fits the chain. Confirm the opening size with the seller, and check that the chain links do not rub the carving.
