How to Clean Hetian Jade Jewelry and Carvings Safely
Learn how to clean Hetian jade bangles, pendants, bead bracelets, plaques and carvings with mild soap and soft cloths, and which cleaning methods to avoid.
Natural Hetian jade is durable, but it still deserves gentle cleaning. The right routine removes skin oils and dust without risking the polish, the carving, or any cord, clasp and other material attached to the piece.
What you need
Keep cleaning simple. A soft, lint-free cloth, a bowl of lukewarm water and a few drops of mild, unperfumed soap are enough for most Hetian jade pieces. Avoid hard brushes and anything abrasive.
Keep a second, dry cloth for buffing. It returns an even, natural sheen once the piece is dry.
Cleaning steps
Dampen the cloth rather than soaking the jade. Wipe every surface gently, including the inner curve of a bangle and the underside of a carving.
Rinse the cloth in clean water and wipe again to remove any soap film, then dry the piece with the soft cloth and leave it on a flat surface until it is fully dry.
If dust sits inside fine carving lines, a clean, soft toothbrush used with a very light touch usually lifts it. Leave stubborn marks alone rather than pressing harder.
What to avoid
Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners. Vibration and heat can stress natural fissures, and many jade pieces include cords, glue points or fittings that were not made for machine cleaning.
Avoid household chemicals, bleach, acid, silver dip, toothpaste and baking soda. Strong cleaners can dull the polish and are unnecessary for natural jade.
Avoid long soaks and hot water. A brief damp wipe is safer for the stone, the cord and any other material in the piece.
Cleaning by piece type
Bangles: wipe the inner and outer curve with a damp cloth and dry well. Remove the bangle before hand washing, swimming or cleaning with chemicals.
Bead bracelets: keep the strand dry when possible and blot rather than rub, so the cord or elastic does not absorb water for long.
Pendants and plaques: clean the jade and the cord separately, and check the cord opening for dust.
Sculptures and palm carvings: dust with a dry soft cloth and use a lightly dampened cloth only for fingerprints, drying the piece immediately.
This guide is general jade care education. Always follow the care notes for the individual piece, and contact Yufu Jade if a piece needs cleaning, re-stringing or repair advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wash Hetian jade with water?
Yes. Plain, lukewarm water on a soft cloth is the safest way to clean natural Hetian jade. Keep soaking brief, wipe the soap away and dry the piece completely.
Is an ultrasonic cleaner safe for jade?
Yufu Jade does not recommend ultrasonic or steam cleaning for jade jewelry. Vibration and heat can stress natural fissures, and cords, glue points or other fittings may not withstand machine cleaning.
Can I use soap on jade?
A few drops of mild, unperfumed soap on a damp cloth is fine. Rinse the residue off with a clean damp cloth and dry the piece. Avoid detergent with bleach, abrasives or strong fragrance.
How often should I clean my jade?
Clean when you can see oils or dust. A gentle wipe after wear is usually enough; a fuller cleaning with soapy water is only needed when the piece has picked up visible residue.
