You do not need to buy jade care oil. Natural Hetian jade keeps its lustre through wearing, cleaning and good storage. If you want to spend money on care, spend it on the things that genuinely help: a soft cloth, a lined box and professional restringing when needed.
Why jade oil is sold
Jade oil is sold because a thin oil film makes any stone look glossier for a few days, and because the tradition of pan yu gets confused with feeding the stone. Neither reason benefits the stone itself.
Untreated nephrite is not porous in any useful sense. Oil sits on the surface, attracts dust, and dulls the piece over time.
What actually helps
Buy a good microfibre cloth and a lined jewellery box with separate compartments. Those two items do more for a jade collection than every bottle of jade oil combined.
Professional restringing, and a proper pouch for travel, complete the genuinely useful care kit.
The one exception
Some pieces arrive from sellers oiled for display. That film can be removed with mild soap and a soft cloth, revealing the natural lustre — which is usually better than the oiled look.
If a piece looks dull after cleaning, it is not thirsty. Wear it for a few days; the lived-in lustre returns on its own.
