How to Care for Jade in Winter
Winter jade care: how cold, indoor heating and thick sleeves affect Hetian jade, and the habits that protect it through the season.
Winter is easier on jade than summer, but it has its own hazards: cold hands when bangles go on, dry heated rooms, and sleeves that catch and pull. Three small habits cover the season.
Cold and putting pieces on
Nephrite tolerates cold without harm — the risk is in your hands, not the stone. Cold hands are stiffer, so bangles are harder to put on and easier to drop. Warm your hands first and work over a soft surface.
Rapid temperature swings do not crack jade the way they can crack glass, but avoid exposing a piece to sudden heat after it has been in the cold — the fittings mind more than the stone.
Dry heated rooms
Central heating dries the air, and dry air ages cords, elastic and glue faster than anything else in winter. The stone itself is unaffected — the stringing is not.
Keep pieces in their pouches in a drawer rather than on a shelf near a radiator, and check cords a little more often in winter.
Sleeves and layering
Thick sleeves are the hidden winter hazard: a bangle catching a cuff is a knock waiting to happen, and pendant cords snag under scarves and collars.
Wear the bangle over a smooth inner sleeve or under a looser cuff, and tuck pendants inside layers when moving through doors and crowds.
This guide is general jade care education. Always follow the care notes for the individual piece, and contact Yufu Jade if a piece needs cleaning, re-stringing or repair advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can jade crack in cold weather?
Nephrite handles cold well. The real winter risks are stiff cold hands dropping pieces, and dry heated rooms ageing cords and fittings.
Should I take jade off under thick sleeves?
Either wear it over a smooth inner layer or choose looser cuffs. A bangle catching on a sleeve is a knock waiting to happen.
Does indoor heating damage jade?
Not the stone, but dry heated air ages cords, elastic and glue. Store pieces in a drawer away from radiators.
Why does my bangle feel harder to put on in winter?
Cold hands are stiffer. Warm your hands first and work over a soft surface instead of forcing the size.
