How to Store Jade Long-Term
Storing jade long-term: how to prepare Hetian jade pieces for months or years in storage without scratches, damp or dried-out cords.
Jade stored for months or years does not need feeding or oiling — it needs the right environment. Clean each piece, give it its own pouch, choose a stable spot, and check it occasionally. Four steps, and the collection is safe.
Prepare each piece
Clean every piece before it goes into storage — mild soap, soft cloth, completely dry. Oils and fingerprints left on for months settle into a stubborn film.
Check cords, clasps and elastic now. Storing a piece with a failing cord saves the damage for the day it is worn again.
The right environment
A dry, stable place: a drawer or cabinet in a normal room. Avoid attics, basements and windowsills — heat, damp and sunlight age cords and fittings even when the stone itself is indifferent.
Individual soft pouches inside a lined box remain the best arrangement, with bangles flat and cords coiled loosely.
Checking the collection
Take pieces out once or twice a year: unwrap, wipe, inspect, rewrap. A five-minute check catches a drying cord or a tarnishing fitting before either becomes damage.
Keep certificates and documentation with the collection or clearly indexed — provenance is easiest to lose while everything is in boxes.
This guide is general jade care education. Always follow the care notes for the individual piece, and contact Yufu Jade if a piece needs cleaning, re-stringing or repair advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should I store jade I rarely wear?
Clean it, dry it completely, wrap it in its own soft pouch and keep it in a dry drawer away from sunlight and heat. Check it once or twice a year.
Does jade dry out in storage?
The stone does not dry out — it is not porous like wood. What ages in storage are cords, elastic and fittings, which is why the environment matters.
Should I oil jade before storing it?
No. Oils attract dust and leave films. A clean, dry piece in a pouch needs nothing else.
Can I store jade in a safe deposit box?
Yes. Wrap each piece separately, and avoid plastic bags for long periods — soft cloth pouches let the piece breathe while protecting it.
