What Can Damage Jade? The Full List of Chemicals, Habits and Hazards
What can damage jade? Impact, chemicals, heat, ultrasonic cleaning and careless storage — the complete list of hazards and how to avoid each one.
Nephrite is one of the toughest stones in jewellery, which breeds a dangerous confidence. Here is the complete list of what actually damages jade — and the single habit that avoids each item.
Impact and pressure
Sharp blows — a bangle on a counter, a pendant on a tiled floor — are the number one cause of jade damage. Toughness resists breakage, but a focused hit on a thin edge still chips or cracks.
Habit: remove jade for physical work and sports, and put it on over a soft surface.
Chemicals and products
Bleach, ammonia, chlorine, acids and silver dip can dull the polish. Everyday products matter too: perfume, hairspray and lotion build residues, so put jade on last.
Habit: perfume and products before jewellery, never after — and no household chemicals near jade.
Heat, machines and abrasives
Ultrasonic and steam cleaning stress fissures and fittings. Abrasives — toothpaste, baking soda, rough cloths — wear the polish away a little at a time.
Habit: hand clean with a soft cloth and mild soap; never machine clean, never scrub.
Careless storage
Jumbled drawers, standing bangles and windowsill storage cause the slow damage nobody notices until a chip appears. Fittings and cords age fastest in heat and damp.
Habit: one pouch per piece, flat, in a dry drawer away from the window.
This guide is general jade care education. Always follow the care notes for the individual piece, and contact Yufu Jade if a piece needs cleaning, re-stringing or repair advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does bleach damage jade?
Yes. Bleach and other strong household chemicals can dull the polish and react with fittings. Clean jade only with lukewarm water and mild soap.
Can perfume damage jade?
It builds a dulling residue rather than damaging the stone itself. Put jade on after perfume and lotion, and wipe it after wear.
Does heat damage jade?
Brief warmth is harmless, but prolonged heat from radiators or sunlight ages cords, elastic and glue, and sudden steam cleaning can stress the piece.
What is the most common way jade gets damaged?
Impact during daily wear — bangles knocked on counters, pendants dropped on hard floors. Remove jade for active work and handle it over soft surfaces.
