How to Care for Jade in Summer

Summer jade care: how sweat, sunscreen and swimming affect Hetian jade, and the simple routine that keeps it bright through hot weather.

How to Care for Jade in Summer

Summer is the hardest season for jade jewellery, not because of the stone but because of what summer puts on it: sweat, sunscreen and pool water. The stone itself is fine in heat; the routine around it decides how it looks by autumn.

Sweat and skin oils

Sweat is mostly water and salts, and it leaves a dulling film on the polish just as skin oils do. In hot weather that film builds faster, especially on bangles worn against the skin all day.

The answer is a daily evening wipe: a soft dry cloth over the whole piece before storing. It takes ten seconds and keeps the summer film from hardening into dullness.

Sunscreen and lotions

Sunscreen is the worst offender: it is greasy, it sticks, and it works into cord and carving lines. Apply sunscreen and let it absorb before putting jade on — jewellery always goes on last.

If sunscreen does reach the piece, clean it with lukewarm water and a little mild soap rather than letting it bake in the sun.

Swimming and chlorine

Take jade off for the pool and the sea. Chlorine dulls the surface and attacks fittings; salt water leaves residue in fine carving. If a piece gets wet, rinse it in plain water and dry it thoroughly.

Store summer pieces away from direct sunlight on windowsills — the heat ages cords and elastic faster than the stone.

A clear care note

This guide is general jade care education. Always follow the care notes for the individual piece, and contact Yufu Jade if a piece needs cleaning, re-stringing or repair advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does sweat damage jade?

Sweat itself is mostly water and salts; the problem is the dulling film it leaves. A daily wipe with a soft dry cloth is all the protection a summer-worn piece needs.

Can I wear jade with sunscreen?

Let sunscreen absorb first, then put jade on last. If sunscreen reaches the piece, clean it with lukewarm water and mild soap.

Can jade stay in the sun?

Brief exposure is fine. Avoid leaving jade on sunlit windowsills for long, mainly to protect cords, elastic and fittings from heat.

Is swimming with jade okay?

No. Pool chlorine and salt water can dull the surface and attack fittings. Rinse with plain water and dry if it happens accidentally.
